The Winter Astro Camp 2007

By Edwin Rodley

There were well over 50 people attending the Winter Astro Camp this year and the venue of the Carterton RSA provided a warm and welcoming Venue. It was a great place to have talks, mingle and socialize. The bar was well used over the weekend. The RSA also provided great Meals and some participants enjoyed the late night music.

Listening to the weather forecast on our drive over to the Wairarapa from Wellington, the radio issued a severe weather warning and strong gales. Luckily, the weather in the Wairarapa was mild with occasional rain. On the Saturday evening, observing was cancelled so Astronomers enjoyed a movie instead.

Dennis Sullivan gives a talk on Gravitational Microlensing*

Attendees listened to a range of interesting talks from The Fall of the Mayan Civilization, The Amazing World of Gravitational Microlensing and Making the Moon to how Climate Change is going to affect us in the future. Chris and Ian had excellent Astro photos and  showed us objects to look out for in the night sky.

The Winter Astro Camp was a great weekend for all who attended and provided a chance to catch up with old friends.

Feeback from other participants

Thank you for organising the weekend meeting, we all enjoyed it very much. Would have liked some viewing, but you cannot organise the weather.

 David Sabiston, Napier

Once again thank you for the efforts of the team to organize yet another great event. Always interesting and informative.

Bernard Watt, Wairarapa
